I have found that both the lightest and the heaviest bodies (excepting some very heavy mahogany and walnut bodied) tend to be ash. Those with bad backs or who are willing to risk a fizzy sounding guitar (some light bodies sound like scum) it is faster and easier to shop for an ash body.

So, for an "average" weight body most end up with alder. Most alder is not too heavy but really light alder is very hard to find.

A whole lot of ash is unsuitable because of being too heavy. Alder looks like boiled chicken except every once in a while a beautiful figured piece is found - it only really looks cool if it is one piece.Īsh can be very heavy, middlin or very light. Ash needs a lot more grain filling and the finishing is more tedious, but I like the final look enough I am not deterred.Īlder is more susceptible to differential shrinkage so I actually seek out one piece alder bodies where others are trying to find one piece ash bodies.
